๐ Overview
Designing the cluster, infotainment, and the track app associated with the Chevrolet Corvette. As a team, we implemented features that are essential for the driverโs safety and experience and got rid of features that could potentially distract the drivers when they are on track.
๐Background
User research
Step 1: Interview performance car drivers about their track expereince
We interviewed two participants who own performance vehicles and have prior track experience. The questions focused on their pre-track day preparations, the key information they monitor while driving, and their post-driving routines.
Pre track
Find the track
Find the closest track or the track with the best rating
Inefficient teamwork
Study a track map beforehand to familiarize themselves with the layout, identifying key corners, straights, braking zones, and potential hazards
Struggle to distribute office space
Ensure their car is in optimal condition, checking tire pressure, oil levels, brakes, and other fluids.
On track
Track recording
Use in-car cameras or dedicated recording systems capture video footage of the laps
Lap timer
Use in-car lap timers or apps to track their lap times in real-time, allowing them to see improvements and set goals for faster laps
Post track
Analyzing the recordings
Review in-car data or video footage to analyze their line and track approach, focusing on how to improve for the next session
Share track review
Provide ratings and comments for the track
Step 2: Go through interview notes and classify vehicle & driving info
To help drivers better focus on the road and not distracted by unnecessary info input, we classify information display into three different prioritizations
Key findings
Tier 1: Must have
Gear, rpm, speed, fuel level, alerts, odometer, TPMS (Tire pressure monitor system)
Tier 2: Good to have
Lap timer, track map
Tier 3: Not necessary to have
G-Force, map
โ Problem statement
How do we design the track mode with enhanced displays and performance tracking to improve the driving experience for performance car enthusiasts?
๐ง Ideation
Track APP
Racetrack finder
Easily locate the track nearby and see othersโ reviews and racing videos to better prepare for the track day.
Dash recorder
Record the track experience and can be used post-track to analyze a specific driving session.
Track history
Look up past track sessions and review video footage to analyze performance details.
Vehicle control
Use the mobile app to lock & unlock your vehicle. Alerts & maintenance remainders will also show up under message.
Instrument cluster (Dashboard)
Information display
Only display the information labeled as "must have" according to the notes from user research
Driving mode UI variation
Design interfaces that look significantly different for corresponding drive modes
Infotainment (Center console)
Vehicle settings
Allow drivers to control navigation, media player, HVAC, drive modes, etc.
Track feature
Help drivers recognize their track performance with information including previous lap time, current lap time, and best lap time.
๐ฏ Final deliverable
PART I: Mobile APP
Pre track: Track locator

Search for race tracks nearby
On track: Track recorder

Record a track session and monitor real-time performance
Post track: Track history

Play back track session recordings
Vehicle control

Vehicle control on mobile devices
PART II: Dashboard
Drive mode: Tour

Displays speed, gear, fuel range, alert, navigation, and odometer
Drive mode: Performance

Displays performance-related information, including TPMS, rpm, and engine monitoring gauges
PART III: Center console
Landing page

Navigation on the left, media and vehicle control on the right
Vehicle control

Streamlined vehicle controls for lighting, wipers, mirrors, and trunk
Track experience

Sync with the mobile app and monitor lap times
HVAC
Application of Fitt's law
HVAC controls follow Fittsโs Law, combining temperature and airflow in a single circular panel for quicker, easier adjustments with minimal hand movement.

Media player
Passenger-inclusive design
Music UI with volume on the rightโeasy for passengers to reach, while drivers primarily use steering wheel controls, keeping the experience intuitive and distraction-free for both.
